I’m a doctor, nurse, physician’s assistant—why would this program benefit me?
As doctors, nurses and other clinicians like you move from clinical care roles to management and leadership positions, they are finding a strong need to be better equipped to handle the management and business side of patient care. Just like knowledge and best practices are needed to care for a patient’s medical needs, there is a rich body of knowledge and best practices developed to run patient care delivery systems efficiently and effectively. Our program will prepare you with the knowledge and confidence you need to succeed as a manager and leader of a healthcare organization.
Why is this program run out of a business school? Will it really apply to healthcare?
Healthcare organizations faces similar challenges as other service firms in accessibility, quality of service and profitability. From this perspective, a business school is the ideal home for such a healthcare management program, as we know business, finance, marketing and operations across a variety of contexts. Here at RBS, we have world-class faculty with expertise and experience not only in general issues that make and break businesses, but also in the healthcare, insurance and pharmaceutical industries. Some of them are also involved in clinical research. Running a solid business is critical to patient care. Just as your science degree prepared you to help patients clinically, a business degree focused on healthcare will equip you to serve this space in a management role.
How long will it take for me to finish this program part-time?
If you attend full-time, you can complete the program within two years. Working students may also pursue the program on a part-time basis, and must finish the degree within three years.
The Affordable Care Act has changed the way my hospital does business. Will this program help me understand the implications of this new law and how to comply?
Absolutely! The ACA is changing the way hospitals and other providers do business across the healthcare sector. Our courses, frequently taught by practitioners and leading researchers, will address key issues and concerns regarding ACA compliance. Specifically, the course Healthcare Legal & Ethics will deal with the implications of this law.
I work in pharma, the health insurance industry. Is there any value in pursuing this kind of degree?
Yes. This program’s focus is on healthcare providers and their extended supply chains, which includes the pharmaceutical and insurance industries, as well as pharmacies, wholesalers and pharmaceutical benefit managing companies. As a pharma or health insurance professional, this degree will help you understand the patient care delivery side behind each of your claims and pharmaceutical regulations and practices.
I just graduated from nursing school, but I don’t have any work experience and want to pursue a master’s right away. Is this the right program for me?
Yes, particularly if you know that, at some point, you want to grow into a management position that will require you to be knowledgeable in the management of staff, budgets, finance, compliance issues and supply chain. While the majority of our students will have clinical work experience prior to entering our program, you are not disqualified from acceptance if you have not yet worked.
I have a degree in public health and want to work at a public clinic. How will this help me?
If you desire to work in a patient care delivery management function, such as in public health clinics, then yes. This program will benefit you. While our program won’t equip you specifically to build public health advocacy programs or initiatives, it will prepare you to manage clinicians and staff in public health settings.
Is this program based in Newark or New Brunswick?
In person classes will primarily be held in New Brunswick.
