February 3, 2009

The faculty, staff and students of Rutgers Business School mourn the loss of John H. Dunning, retired emeritus professor of international business, who passed away on January 29, 2009.

John Dunning was a long-time member of the department of business environment and international business and a world-class scholar in international business. He was also an emeritus professor of international business at the University of Reading in the UK and had worked in the field of international business for over 50 years.

John was widely recognized and honored as one of the world’s most influential and cited scholars. In June 2008, he was appointed an OBE (Order of the British Empire) for his services to the international business scholarship. He researched the economics of foreign direct investment and the activities of multinational enterprises and had written, co-authored, or edited over 50 books on the subject. He was also the senior economic advisor to the investment analyst branch of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development; and had previously worked with several departments of the UK government. He was not only published in refereed journals on International Business but he also served on eight editorial boards of refereed journals and was the Chairperson of the Advisory Editorial Board to the UNCTAD journal Transnational Corporations. He was awarded Honorary Doctorates from the University of Uppsala in Sweden, the Autonomous University of Madrid, the University of Antwerp and the Chinese Culture University.

John was very active in business academics and was recognized for his many contributions. His relationship with Rutgers Business School continued after he retired, as he continued to mentor PhD students and to serve on the PhD Committee. He was also instrumental in the merger between the business school at the University of Reading and Henley Management College, with the center being renamed The John H.
