Jets GM inspires RBS class
March 19, 2009
Students were treated to a rare glimpse of life inside the NFL by Mike Tannebaum, General Manager of the New York Jets, at a recent Business Forum class at Rutgers Business School. Tannenbaum spoke about his experiences in the business world and about the importance of finding a job in something you are passionate about.“Having Mike Tannenbaum come speak to the class shows the type of access that RBS students have to high level and high profile industry leaders,” said Beth Crotty, Associate Dean of Undergraduate Program in Newark. “The purpose of the Business Forum class is to expose students to top-level executives in the business community. Through these leaders, students get firsthand knowledge on developing their career and learn the value of good business communication.”Tannenbaum gave pointers about career development including the importance of “creating value, not burning bridges, and to always say ‘Yes” and listen.” He also shared some negotiating secrets with the students, for example, “say a lot without saying anything; collect information, don’t exchange it; and, go for win/win in relationship negotiating.”“Hearing all of his experiences first-hand helped me understand what being in the business field is all about, and that you have to enjoy and love what you do- it’s like you never have to work for the rest of your life,” said RBS student, Elizabeth Mendoza. “I am going to follow his advice about never being discouraged, and when turned down, just work harder and keep at it with a positive attitude.”Rutgers Business School would like to thank Mike Tannenbaum for his time and Beth Crotty for organizing this wonderful experience for students.
