Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. presents summer internship opportunities in marketing and R&D for MBA students

October 26, 2009

Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. visited Rutgers Business School (RBS) in early October to present internship opportunities in marketing and research & development available this summer.

In the marketing department, interns will be handling brand planning, sales-force communication, customer segmentation, pricing strategies and marketing analytics. The R&D interns are expected to work on process optimization, strategy consulting, organizational development and change management.

MBA students had a positive impression of the Bristol-Meyers Squibb’s presentation. Many stayed behind long after the presentation ended to ask further questions and network with Bristol-Myers Squib representatives Andy Witriol and Rob Schneller. “You can tell Bristol-Meyers Squibb has a serious commitment to their internship program and it was reflected in their presentation,” said Patrick Joe, first year MBA student from Temple, Texas concentrating in Pharmaceutical Management and Marketing.

“It isn't uncommon to find classmates with backgrounds in engineering and science which makes the R&D internships so interesting for RBS MBA students,” said Joe.

Corporate presentations are a key part of the MBA program at RBS. The Office of Career Management brings companies from a variety of industries to give corporate presentations to MBA students. The Bristol-Meyers Squibb corporate presentation was another example of RBS providing MBA students with opportunities for internships, full-time employment and networking opportunities.

Witriol (RBS alum class of 2004) representing marketing and Schneller R&D, said Bristol-Meyers Squibb is aiming to create the next generation BioPharma company by using their “string of pearls” strategy, which emphasizes the acquisition of smaller companies that complement and enhance an internal capability.

Students inquired about a variety of topics including corporate culture, the emergence of biotech, the company’s BioPharma strategy, specific marketing strategies for particular drugs and illnesses and finally the role of geographical and socio-economic concerns on Bristol-Meyers Squibb’s strategy.

Another key component of the presentation included a discussion about past summer internship opportunities at Bristol-Meyers Squibb. Last year, they took six summer associates with three being from RBS. Of the six summer associates, five were given full-time offers including all three from RBS.

This summer, internship opportunities were available in both marketing and R&D. Both internships would be for 10 weeks with challenging assignments. Summer associates would be immersed in day to day operations, in-depth orientations and exposure to senior managers. In addition, summer interns are given priority for full-time positions later on.
