On a sunny autumn morning, Rutgers Business School graduate students, alumni and staff helped to start a new tradition.

They gathered inside a heated tent for a catered tailgate party before the Rutgers-Cincinnati football game in Piscataway on Nov. 16. And in a festive atmosphere, with live music and plenty of scarlet red everywhere, students from a variety of programs, including Full-time MBA and Masters of Quantitative Finance, had a chance to mingle with one another as well as with RBS staff and alumni.

"I go to a lot of networking events. This one was more casual," said Danielle Burkhardt, who received a Rutgers MBA in 2010 and is an active member of the Rutgers Business School Alumni Association. "It was a different atmosphere than the usual networking event at a bar."

As organizers of the event realized, football and tailgating represent an ideal backdrop for networking as well as fueling school spirit and camaraderie.

Weston Gunnarson, a first-year student in the Master of Quantitative Finance program, said he learned the value of strong alumni connections as an undergraduate student at the University of Florida.

"Having a strong alumni network is really important," Gunnarson said. "It's important to be able to get together and help each other."
