RBS Business Journal Impact Index

The RBS General Impact Index is intended to measure the extent to which business journals contribute to the knowledge base of the business world and to the general public. The index, shown below, has two dimensions: the Classroom Impact Index and the Popular Impact Index. The Classroom Impact Index reflects the number of citations a journal receives in business textbooks, while the Popular Impact Index is based on the number of citations a journal receives in popular business books. The General Impact Index demonstrates the average between the classroom and popular index scores.

Summary of Methodology

The RBS Classroom Impact Index reflects the frequency of academic journals cited in business textbooks—in this case, textbooks assigned in Rutgers Business School MBA program core courses by subject and business area. Textbook citation statistics were accounted for across various subject areas. Then, the number of textbook citations each journal received in each of the subject areas was recorded and standardized to get an average score that was converted to an index between 0-100, where the most-cited journal receives a score of 100, and a journal with no citations, a zero. 

A similar methodology is followed for the Popular Impact Index, only this score is based on the number of citations a journal received in business books intended for a general audience—in this case, the 60 most popular business books based on the New York Times Best Sellers list.
