Academic Programs

CHANGES FOR FALL 2013

The New Brunswick Office of Undergraduate Programs will be discontinuing the use of major cohorts. In their place, student counselors will provide a list of courses for newly declared majors and those switching from one major to another. Since many business courses are now offered both in the fall and spring semesters, and some in the summer as well, there is no longer a recommended order for taking courses, but pre-requisites are now listed to assist the student in making their choices. Most business core and major requirements will remain the same, with the exception of those mentioned below.

The major requirements for Rutgers Business School: Undergraduate–New Brunswick programs of study can be divided into three parts: six eligibility courses that students must complete before they may take additional courses within the Business School, core course requirements that all students must complete regardless of their choice of major program (Accounting, BAIT, Finance, Leadership and Management, Marketing, or Supply Chain and Marketing science), and a combination of required and elective courses that students take according to their choice of major. Students must complete the requirements of the major that are in effect at the time of their admission into the major.

It should be noted that in order to receive a degree from the Rutgers Business School:  Undergraduate-New Brunswick, students must take at least 45 business credits at the Rutgers Business School: Undergraduate–New Brunswick. All core courses and required courses specific to the major must be completed with a grade of C or better.

There are 4 courses from SEBS that resemble RBS course titles. Since some RBS-NB business core courses have some content overlap, RBS-NB students may NOT receive credit for these courses. If you take these courses from Fall 2011 onwards, the courses will be e-credited. The courses are:

  • Intro. to Marketing (11:373:231)
  • Intro. to Management (11:373:241)
  • Business Finance I (11:373:351)

*Accounting majors must take Business Law I as their required course. All other business majors may choose either Business Law I or Business Ethics.

**Beginning Fall 2013, there will be two introductory Finance courses. Financial Management for Finance Majors (33:390:310) will be for those who intend to major in Finance. Financial Management (33:390:300) will be for those who have no intention of pursuing Finance. Students planning to double major in Accounting and Finance should take Financial Management for Finance Majors (33:390:310) instead of Financial Management (33:390:300). Students who switch into the Finance major will also need Finance 310. Credit will not be given for both courses, so, if students have any interest in pursuing Finance, they should take Finance 310. Otherwise, Finance 300 will be sufficient.

***Students admitted to the New Brunswick Business School prior to Fall 2013, who did not complete Principles of Management (33:620:300) by the end of Spring 2013, need to complete Intro. to Management (33:620:301) instead. Principles of Management (33:620:300) will no longer be offered after Spring 2013. Students admitted to the Business School beginning with the fall 2013 semester must take BOTH 33:620:301 AND 33:620:302 if they did not previously complete 33:620:300.

**** Management Information Systems is required for all majors except accounting. Accounting majors must take Accounting Information Systems. 33:010:458

Please note: If you are a double or triple major in Business School departments, and are utilizing a particular course to count for a requirement in each of two majors, you are only permitted to do this “double count” ONE TIME, in RBS.  Once you have utilized your one opportunity to “double count” a course between two majors, you will have exhausted this possibility for the remainder of your Bachelor’s degree.  One “double count” possibility, per student.
