Graduate Admissions Frequently Asked Questions

Admissions Process/Requirements

If you have questions that are program specific, please go to that program's home page and review the FAQ section for that specific program.

What undergraduate major is required or recommended?

The Full-Time and part-time MBA programs accept all majors. The Master of Accountancy programs typically require a bachelor's degree in accounting except for the MACCY Professional Accounting program; this program requires students to have a bachelor's degree in a business field other than accounting. The MQF and MFinA programs look for students with a Finance, Math, or Economics background. Candidates for the Master of Supply Chain Management program must hold a bachelor's degree or equivalent, preferably in business or a related field.

Do all of the application materials need to be in before the deadline?

We strongly recommend that all required documents be submitted prior to the deadline.  However, we will continue to accept additional applications and supporting documents on a rolling basis as long as space permits.  If you have not yet taken the GMAT or GRE and it is required for the program you are applying to, get your other credentials submitted by the deadline and then submit your test scores as soon as you receive them.

Who should I ask to write my letters of recommendation?

Generally both letters of recommendation should come from either current or recent employers.  If you are self-employed, other possibilities may include clients or vendors. For those applicants who do not have full-time work experience, letters of recommendation can come from recent professors. Letters of reference can be submitted either online through the online application or they can be mailed to our office directly by the recommender on company letterhead.

Can I defer my admission?

You may defer admission for up to one year. To request a deferment, you must submit a written request along with your $300 tuition deposit within 30 days of the date of admission.

I applied two years ago and want to reapply. Do you still have my credentials?

Applications and supporting credentials are kept for 12 months and then destroyed. To reapply after one year from the initial term of entry sought, you must complete a new application and resubmit all required credentials.

Does RBS offer Graduate or Teaching Assistantships?

Graduate or Teaching Assistantships are only available for PhD students. However, there are also hourly-paid positions as Classroom Assistants available across RBS academic departments. Check with each academic department for availability.

Do international applicants have to have transcripts and grades formally evaluated?

As of November 1, 2016, RBS has changed its policy on educational evaluations. Applicants with international degrees are no longer required to have their educational credentials evaluated by a NACES evaluating agency.* Applicants should submit original or certified (notarized) copies of all post-secondary transcripts, marksheets, examination results, diplomas and degrees. These documents should be mailed to our address. If not issued in English, a translation must be provided from a professional translation agency.

If an applicant already has an advanced degree from the U.S., he/she will need to submit an official copy of the advanced degree as well as the official transcripts of the bachelor’s degree.

*Please note that RBS reserves the right to request an applicant to have their transcript evaluated by a NACES accredited credentialing agency. Situations where this could happen are if the applicant has a three year degree or for applicants requesting a GMAT waiver. The RBS Office of Graduate Admissions will reach out to the applicant with this request. For a list of NACES agencies, go to:

Are international students eligible to receive academic scholarships or financial aid?

Financial aid is not available to international students through Rutgers University. RBS graduate students may, however, apply for a private loan with a U.S. co-signer. For more information, please visit the Office of Financial Aid. Check directly with the lender for other restrictions/qualifications for a pre-approval.

We do have limited academic scholarships available for international students. Additionally, F-1 students may apply for an on-campus job, for up to 20 hours per week.  RBS will be offering qualified candidates hourly positions at RBS.

What is your minimum GMAT, GRE, GPA, and TOEFL?

Applicants should refer to the class profile for current averages but are reminded that these are NOT minimum requirements. Many students are admitted with higher and lower scores and GPAs.  The minimum TOEFL score varies per program but the general range is between 90-100 IBT. Most RBS programs require a score of a 7 on the IELTS.

Should I retake my GMAT, GRE, or TOEFL?

The Admissions Committee carefully reviews all items a candidate submits in support of the application. If, in the case of an otherwise strong candidate, the test score is below those of the students we can admit for that semester, the Committee may recommend that the candidate retake the test. Candidates who retake the test will be reconsidered for the original term of entry or for up to one year from the term of the original application.

If I take the GMAT or GRE more than once, which score do you use?

You may retake the GMAT or GRE without penalty, and we will use your highest score.

Will you accept a GMAT or GRE score that is more than 5 years old?

No. We will only use scores from tests taken no longer than 5 years prior to the date of enrollment in Rutgers Business School: Graduate Programs.

Do you ever waive the GMAT or GRE?

For the MBA program, the GMAT or GRE is not required for holders of a Ph.D., MD, JD and PharmD.  In addition to this, if a student is applying for the part-time MBA or Professional Accounting MBA program, we can waive the GMAT or GRE based on 10 or more years of full-time work experience (or 8 years if they have a Masters degree) on a case by case basis.*  The MA in Taxation program, the MA in Governmental Accounting program, and the MS in Supply Chain do not require a GMAT or GRE.

* Applicants must have an undergraduate GPA above a 3.0 in order to be eligible for the work experience GMAT waiver.

Can I waive the TOEFL exam?

In general, the TOEFL is required from all applicants whose first language is not English. However, if you have completed an undergraduate or graduate degree in the U.S. the TOEFL is waived.

Applicants who have not completed a prior U.S. degree, but have been employed in the U.S. for a minimum of three years, may be waived on the basis of a satisfactory score on the verbal portion of the GMAT or GRE.

Can I transfer credit for courses completed at another university or otherwise qualify for advanced standing?

The maximum number of transfer credits we will accept is 6 credits for both part-time and full-time MBA students only. The courses must be no more than 5 years old from the time they were taken, with a grade of B or better, from an AACSB accredited school. Students can also receive advanced standing if they have a JD degree and/or have their CPA license. More detailed information can be found here.

What is the difference between the Full-Time and Part-Time MBA programs?

The Full-Time program begins with a cohort of students taking the core courses together. In order to compete for on-campus and off-campus summer internships, students in the full-time program must take the Career Management Program course in their first semester. The program is highly ranked, and students take part in a more closely knit MBA community, and they are expected to participate in student clubs and career-related events/activities. The Full-Time program is 21 months, and students MUST enter in the fall semester.

The part-time program is geared for the working professional. Therefore, part-time MBA students are not expected to pursue a summer internship. Students can complete the MBA at their own pace (up to 11 credits per semester). Students have the flexibility to begin the program in the fall, spring, or summer and can take courses at our satellite locations in Jersey City or Madison. Part-time students may register with the MBA Office of Career Management (OCM) only after earning 30 credits, so that the OCM can then help them compete for full-time MBA opportunties, on and off campus.

You can also view the differences between the MBA programs via the MBA Programs Comparison Chart.

Is the curriculum the same for the Full-Time and Part-Time MBA programs?

Yes, the curriculum is identical for the full-time and part-time MBA programs.

Can I switch from the Part-Time MBA program to the Full-Time MBA program?

Rutgers Business School does not permit students to switch to the Full-Time program once they are enrolled in the part-time program. Please carefully consider which program is best suited to your goals prior to applying.

Can I apply to multiple programs at RBS?

Yes but you will need to submit an application and application materials for each program.

Do you have on-line courses?

The MBA has several core and elective courses available on-line. The MAACY in Governmental Accounting and Master of Supply Chain Management programs are entirely online. The Fall and Spring semesters of the MAACY Financial Accounting program are also online.

As a Full-Time MBA student, will I be able to work part-time?

The first semester of the program is very demanding, and students should not plan to work during this term. Some students may find it possible to work limited hours during the rest of their program.

Do you have weekend courses in the MBA program?

Some courses are available on Saturdays, but most of our courses are held Monday through Thursday evenings from 6:00pm – 9:00pm in Newark and 6:40pm – 9:40pm in New Brunswick.  The full-time core courses and many electives are held during the day.

How long does it take to complete the MBA program as a Part-Time student? As a Full-Time student?

On average, RBS part-time MBA students complete the program within 3 ½ to 4 years.  Depending on the number of courses you are able to take each term or if you have Advanced Standing credit, you may be able to finish in less time or it may take you longer. The program must be completed within eight years of the first term of enrollment.

The Full-Time program is designed to be completed in two years with a summer internship between the 1st and 2nd year.  It is possible to complete it sooner if you were an undergraduate business major and receive 6 credits of Advanced Standing and do not seek an internship.

What are the laptop computer requirements for Full-Time MBA students?

While not required, it is recommended that Full-Time MBA students purchase a laptop computer.

If I commute by train, how can I get to campus from Newark Penn Station or the Broad Street Station?

Can I enroll in day classes as a Part-Time MBA Student?

Yes, except for the Full-Time MBA core courses designed for the Full-Time MBA program in Newark.
