Basic Organizational and Supervisory Skills - Curriculum

Setting Goals

Work as we know it is changing.  With a shift from activity and time spent to results, all organizations are looking for measureable outcomes and value.  Understand how goals are effective in motivating yourself and your employees.  Learn when it makes sense to use SMART and stretch goals, and why it makes sense to limit the number of goals set.

Change Management in a Changing World

Restructuring, relocation, reorganization, new systems, sales growth, and changing job responsibilities are some of the many changes impacting today’s global workplace.  Sometimes these changes are difficult for the individual to manage on their own. This module provides insights to understand how to personally manage the changes that are impacting you and your organization.

Communications

Communication is the master skill underlying all successful businesses. Done well, it can dramatically improve business interactions. Communication enhances understanding, and helps to clearly define problems and develop solutions. This, in turn, saves time, reduces errors, and strengthens the quality of business relationships.

Performance Management for Retention and Growth

Performance management is a continuous process of two-way communications that integrates goal setting and performance feedback plus employee development.  When successfully implemented, it leads to improved employee performance, thus enabling an organization to meet its business objectives while retaining key employees.

Collaboration and Cross-functional Teams

Empowerment and collaboration play major roles in an organization’s overall performance and in building its competitive advantage. Managers need the tools to move from director to coach; and from manager to collaborator. This module covers the essential aspects of team development and team building when different functions are united on the same team. We will also explore team decision making, motivating a team, and staying focused on organizational, as well as team goals.

Time Management

Managing time effectively directly impacts the ability to accomplish work-related and personal goals.  While no one has complete control of time, this module focuses on the concept of self-management and reducing individual time wasters.  Using tests for necessity, appropriateness, and efficient use of time and examining reasons for procrastination, you will leave knowing the right questions to ask yourself and your team to reduce the impact of time stealers.

Problem Solving

Workplace problems require mental agility, as well as honed diagnostic skills and political savvy.  Learn to analyze the nature of a problem, come to a good diagnosis, and recommend and implement solutions for corrective action.  Even demanding and complex problems can be approached logically and resolved effectively with a critical thinking approach.

Conflict Management

Ideally, effective planning would avoid any type of conflict in the workplace.  But occasionally unanticipated circumstances arise that challenge even seasoned supervisors.  Learn to be consistent and respectful while employing emotional balance and intelligence to resolve conflicts by creating win/win situations.  Leave with strategies, tactics, and tools to turn negatives into positives.
