Rutgers Master of Accountancy in Financial Accounting alumnus Philip Sookram, CPA applies program skills as assistant professor of accountancy at Saint Peter's University.

Alum has a lot to give back – to the teaching profession

Philip Sookram: graduated Rutgers Business School – New Brunswick

Job: assistant professor, Saint Peter’s University

Graduate degree: Master of Accountancy in Financial Accounting

Throughout his education, Philip Sookram gained an appreciation for outstanding teachers. Like all students, he experienced a range of teachers; some better than others. While he pursued his accounting interest, career, and CPA awarded by the New York State Education Department, he also developed a “knack for teaching,” Sookram said.

“I understand the concepts and I have experience applying those concepts to real-world situations,” said Sookram.  “I also have the patience and ability to convey those concepts to others.”

Sookram said: "I chose the Master of Accountancy in Financial Accounting program because the program helped me fulfill the 150 credit requirement for me to obtain my CPA license. The intensive summer session followed by online courses provided flexibility for me to complete the program at my pace, while allowing me to work the tax season and gain experience at a CPA firm."

“The faculty teaching the Master of Accountancy in Financial Accounting were wonderful, and they supported my teaching interest,” Sookram said.

Assistant Professor of Professional Practice Ann Medinets stood out to Sookram.  “Dr. Medinets challenged me to be a better student during her corporate governance course and a research paper,” Sookram said.

“I appreciate what teachers have given me, and I have a lot to give back to the teaching profession,” said Sookram.
