Building Access, Community, and Opportunity
The RBS UFirst Program is a comprehensive student success and community-building initiative that supports Rutgers Business School students as they navigate their college experience, particularly those who may not have equal access to institutional knowledge, professional networks, mentorship, and resources. These students often include first-generation college students, Pell Grant-eligible students, and students from high-need communities.
Through academic enrichment, leadership development, mentorship, community building, professional networking, educational programming, and a signature capstone experience, the RBS UFirst Program offers multiple pathways for student engagement and growth. By fostering meaningful connections, expanding access to resources and opportunities, and strengthening students’ sense of belonging, the program cultivates a supportive community that helps students build the knowledge, confidence, and connections they need to thrive at Rutgers University, Rutgers Business School, and beyond.
Signature offerings include:
- National First-Generation Celebration programs and events
- Financial Accounting Fundamentals and other academic enrichment experiences that help students build foundational knowledge, strengthen classroom performance, and support long-term academic achievement
- The RBS UFirst Mentoring Track
- An Annual Capstone Experience that connects students’ lived experiences with broader narratives of access, opportunity, achievement, resilience, and social mobility
The program includes a structured mentorship track that connects students with peer, graduate student, faculty, and staff mentors, as well as year-round opportunities for professional development and community building. The RBS UFirst Program also hosts National First-Generation Celebration Week activities each November, celebrating the achievements, experiences, and contributions of first-generation college students, professionals, and allies across the Rutgers Business School and broader business community. Programs and activities include: “Pathfinders: First-Gen Business Leader Spotlight” and “First-Gen Biz Bridge: Connect, Engage, and Opportunity.”
As part of its commitment to student success, the RBS UFirst Program also provides participants with access to a growing portfolio of academic enrichment experiences designed to strengthen classroom performance and support long-term academic achievement. Among these offerings is Financial Accounting Fundamentals, a preparatory learning experience designed to help students build foundational accounting knowledge before enrolling in Intro to Financial Accounting, a core course in the Rutgers Business School curriculum. By introducing key concepts, terminology, and problem-solving strategies in a supportive environment, the program helps students develop confidence, strengthen academic readiness, and position themselves for greater success in subsequent coursework.
The academic year culminates with a signature capstone experience that explores themes of access, opportunity, resilience, and social mobility while encouraging students to reflect on their own educational and professional journeys.
By fostering a sense of belonging, expanding networks, and creating pathways to success, the RBS UFirst Program empowers students to leverage their strengths, navigate Rutgers Business School with confidence, and prepare for meaningful futures as business leaders.
