Part-Time MBA Application Checklist

In addition to the Online Application, applicants must complete the following:

1. Application fee (non-refundable) of $70

Checks and money orders should be made payable to Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. Do not send cash. This can also be paid online via a credit card.

The application fee is waived for all military and veteran applicants. If you fall into this category, please e-mail Tishawn Hatchett at PRIOR to submitting your application and send her a copy of your DD 214 form or a copy of your military ID card. Do NOT include your social security number when e-mailing the form. Please block it out prior to sending.

2. Official Transcripts

To expedite the review process, applicants should upload unofficial transcripts to the online application or via email to the admission office. Upon being accepted and committing to the program, applicants must mail in an official transcript for each undergraduate and graduate institution attended.

For Rutgers graduates, please note that even though you are applying to Rutgers as an alumnus, you still need to contact the Registrar's office and request your official transcript be mailed to our office upon admission to the program.

Applicants holding international transcripts do not need to have their transcripts evaluated unless advised by the Rutgers Business School Admissions Committee. For more information on this, or if you are a domestic applicant holding international transcripts, please refer to our international instructions.

3. GMAT, GRE, or Executive Assessment (EA)

Official GMAT, GRE, or EA test results, taken within five years from the term of entrance, are required.

  1. GMAT code: QK5-XT-13
  2. GRE code: 5529
  3. Executive Assessment code: QK5-XT-40
    • Only applicants who have eight (8) or more years of post-bachelor’s professional full-time work experience are eligible to submit an executive assessment (EA) score

Applicants holding one of the following degrees from an accredited U.S. university are exempt from the GMAT/GRE/EA: JD, PhD, MD, or DO. Also exempt are students in the dual-degree PharmD/MBA program.

Test Waivers May Be Available:

RBS may also selectively consider requests for admission without a GMAT/GRE test score for applicants with several years of work experience and a minimum 3.0 GPA in the most recent degree. Priority may be given to experienced candidates with a graduate degree not listed above (e.g., PharmD or MS in a technical field), alumni of Rutgers University, and candidates with an excellent undergraduate academic record and leadership qualities who can help RBS meet its goals for diversity on multiple dimensions. You should request a test waiver prior to taking the GMAT or GRE. See below for more details.

Note: For full consideration in their first semester of application and eligibility for small scholarships, applicants are encouraged to submit a GMAT or GRE test score. The Part-Time MBA program admits students in the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters. A limited number of test waivers are granted for each semester. Other applicants without a test score may be put on a waitlist. An applicant on the waitlist may enroll in up to 6 credits as a non-matriculant (non-degree) student for one semester.

Can I apply to the Part-Time MBA program without having taken the GMAT or GRE test?

Don’t let the lack of a test score stop you from applying! Sometimes an opportunity for career advancement or a need for career change arises quickly. However, since test waivers are highly selective, please realize fit with the program and qualifications beyond the minimum 3.0 GPA and 3 years of work experience are important. All of the following may be considered: a graduate degree, a professional license, extensive experience in positions with increasing responsibility, US military service, and proven leadership in ensuring opportunity for diverse populations in New Jersey and beyond. Each request will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Test waivers are not automatic.

How do I request a test waiver?

To request a waiver, complete the MBA program application with all supporting documents. You can request a waiver in your online application - additional fields will appear once you check the waiver request checkbox, where you can submit a required cover letter stating the reasons for your waiver request, as well as any referenced materials (e.g., professional certificates). Each request will be considered on a case-by-case basis. You should receive an answer to the request within 10 business days. Please direct questions to Graduate Admissions at

Are there any special admissions conditions for those requesting a test waiver?

Applicants granted a waiver may be offered admission contingent on completion of online coursework for proficiency in English, Calculus, and Statistics. Test scores are considered along with other factors in scholarship offers. For full scholarship consideration, applicants are encouraged to submit a GMAT or GRE test score. If a candidate granted admission with a test waiver wishes to defer to a future semester of entry, the candidate must request a new waiver or take the test before re-applying.

I don’t have a graduate degree, but I have passed a test in my professional area (e.g., CFA or CPA). Can I apply for a test waiver?

Your status as a licensed professional will be recognized in the waiver approval process. Please be sure to indicate such achievements on your resume, along with describing all work experience. Years and quality of work experience are strong indicators of a student’s ability to succeed in an MBA program.

What if my test score is low? Can I retake the test?

If you apply with a test score that does not meet the criteria for admission, the admissions team will advise you to retake the test. Test prep services are widely available, including online, and have proven to help students improve their scores. In case of retakes, we only consider the latest test score. Test waivers are only considered for applicants who have not taken either the GMAT or GRE within the previous five years.

4. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), IELTS, Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic), or Duolingo Test of English

You must submit the TOEFL, IELTS PTE Academic, or Duolingo test if English is not the official language in your country. Applicants from countries with more than one official language, including English, (Pakistan, India, Hong Kong, etc.) are not exempt from taking the exam. This requirement can be waived for applicants who have obtained an undergraduate or graduate degree in the U.S. or another English-only speaking country (England, Australia, etc.). This requirement can also be waived if you have three (3) or more years of full-time work experience in the United States.

  1. TOEFL Code: B355
  2. IELTS: Please contact IELTS and have your score sent to our office (address listed below).
  3. PTE Academic is a computer-based academic English language proficiency test designed to measure reading, writing, listening and speaking skills, as they are used in an academic setting. Rutgers Business School requires a minimum score of 68 on PTE Academic.
  4. Duolingo: The test is administered using computer adaptive technology, meaning that the question difficulty adapts to each test taker. The test also integrates a video interview and writing sample, which are sent to an institution along with your proficiency score when you send your results. Rutgers Business School requires a minimum score of 125 on the Duolingo test

5. You must provide two letters of recommendation

Letters of recommendation can either be submitted through the online application or they can be mailed to our office directly by the recommender on company letterhead.

6. Submit your current resume

This can be done through the online application.

7. Essay

Please address both topics on a single Word document:

  1. Describe your specific career aspirations and your reason for pursuing an MBA (500 words).
  2. How will RBS help you achieve these goals? (250 words)

8. International Applicants

Additional requirements apply to international applicants. Please note that students looking for an F-1 visa are not eligible to apply to the part-time program. These instructions only apply to those who are here on working or dependent visa and are looking to pursue a part-time MBA program.
